Beyond Diagnosis
Understanding Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
Receiving an FND diagnosis can feel overwhelming. This guide is designed to help you understand your diagnosis, answer common questions and remind you that you are not alone.
What is FND?
Functional Neurological Disorder affects the functioning of the brain and nervous system. Symptoms are real and involuntary. It is commonly explained as a ‘software rather than hardware’ problem, where communication within the nervous system is disrupted.
Common Symptoms
- Functional seizures
- Weakness
- Tremors
- Walking and balance problems
- Speech difficulties
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Dizziness
- Pain
- Sensory symptoms
Understanding functional seizures
Functional seizures are real events caused by changes in nervous system functioning rather than epilepsy. Keep the person safe and follow their agreed care plan.
Why symptoms fluctuate
One of the defining features of FND is that symptoms can vary from hour to hour or day to day. A good day does not mean someone is cured, and a difficult day does not mean they are not trying.
